Program Description

Student Identification

Goals for the English Learner Program are:

  • to develop proficiency in the English language
  • to have access to the core curriculum

Participation in this program will maximize the student’s academic success. The student will continue in the program until reclassified to Fluent English Proficient (FEP). Annually, each English Learner (EL) is assessed and reviewed to determine his/her progress in learning English. Parents will receive an annual letter reporting the student’s progress. The student is considered an EL until he/she meets ALL of the reclassification criteria. Criteria can be found in the For English learners. If there are any questions, please contact the student’s school or the English Language Development Programs Office at (310) 972-6990. Additional questions will be answered at the school’s English Learner Multicultural Advisory Committee (ELMAC) meetings. Notices of ELMAC meetings are sent to the parents by the school prior to the meeting dates.
